How Your Support Helps
Empowering Women to Lead on and off the Podium
The conductor is a very public role of leadership. They are the face of the organization, recognized by the public (even those who do not attend concerts) from the media promotion of their image and the myriad press coverage. They stand alone on a podium above the musicians, in front of, and at the center of, the ensemble, in charge of up to 200 people. It is one of the most powerful and obvious displays of leadership. While there are hundreds of highly skilled women conductors, men continue to receive the majority of conducting engagements and music director positions.
Your donation helps provide to the Taki Alsop Conductors:
- Mentorship: All TACF award winners receive mentoring from Maestro Alsop and industry leaders that is tailored to their professional needs. This is available throughout their careers.
- Access to world-class conductors with diverse musical viewpoints, conducting techniques and leadership styles.
- Financial awards that assist with:
- Travel and accommodations to attend rehearsals and concerts
- Participation in prestigious masterclasses and workshops
- Orchestral and opera scores
- Professional conductors need an average of 600–800 scores
- Average orchestral conductor score cost $40–$100 with premium scholarly editions costing $200+
- Total for scores: $30,000–$64,000
- Professional videotaping
- Professional Development: The TACF Executive Director is HR - Certified and provides resume and mock interview sessions upon request. A trusted arts manager provides contract negotiation assistance, PR & Branding leaders advise the conductors and remain available, and general career support is always available.
- Community: The Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship conductors are leaders both on the podium and off, in their communities and globally, who, consciously and unconsciously by the role they play, convey and normalize women as leaders. The community is several thousand strong throughout the world including the Fellowship’s 72 global leaders on the podium, each of whom have been awarded financial and/or mentoring support from the Fellowship. There are hundreds of women waiting to join, contribute and continue the work.
The Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship practices careful financial stewardship so that we can provide programs at no cost to our conductors, working to remove financial inequities and ensure everyone has access to the opportunities they deserve. There is no fee to apply to the Fellowship; in addition to award winners, all Mentees receive free mentoring; and, since founding the Fellowship, Marin Alsop has provided mentorship on a pro-bono basis. Every donation makes a big impact.
The Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization registered in the State of New York. Any donation is fully tax-deductible.
