Women’s Conducting Masterclass with Marin Alsop With the BBC Concert Orchestra
Women conductors, apply now to learn under Marin Alsop’s baton and conduct the BCC Concert Orchestra.
Southbank Centre Associate Artist, conducting superstar Marin Alsop, leads a half day masterclass for aspiring women conductors on Friday 27 January 2017.
Selected applicants have the opportunity to conduct Southbank Centre Associate Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra, in varied repertoire and conduct a lunchtime performance for the public.
Southbank Centre is committed to championing the increased visibility of women in classical music. As such, this conducting masterclass is in the public performance platform of The Clore Ballroom and has an invited public audience auditing the course.
The masterclass will include:
~conducting session with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Marin Alsop open Q&A with Marin Alsop
~public concert performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra in The Clore Ballroom at Royal Festival Hall
~invitation to observe closed rehearsal with Marin Alsop and the BBC Symphony Orchestra
~invitation to attend the concert with Marin Alsop conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra on Saturday 28 January
Participating conductors will be given approximately 20 minutes of podium time with the BBC Concert Orchestra under instruction from Marin Alsop. Each participating conductor will also be assigned a section of the course repertoire in advance to conduct in concert at lunchtime on the day.
All conducting sessions will be video recorded and will be emailed to participating conductors after the masterclass.

Day 1: Friday 27 January 2017 The Clore Ballroom at Royal Festival Hall 9am: Arrival 9.30am – 12.30pm: Conducting workshop with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Marin Alsop (all five conductors rotate) 12.30pm – 1pm: Q&A with Marin Alsop and women conductors 1pm – 2pm: Friday Lunch Concert with BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by participant conductors
Travel to Barbican Centre 3pm: Participant conductors observe closed rehearsal with Marin Alsop and the BBC Symphony Orchestra
Day 2: Saturday 28 January 2017 Barbican Centre 7pm: Participant conductors attend pre-concert talk and concert with Marin Alsop and the BBC Symphony Orchestra

Applications will close on Sunday 11 December 2016. Applicants will be notified on Tuesday 20 December 2016.
Payment for successful applicants is due on Tuesday 3 January 2017.
This opportunity is for rising female conductors with significant experience in conducting.

Participation Fee: £150
The chosen successful applicants will be required to pay the £150 participation fee no later than two weeks after notice of acceptance to the workshop. The fee will act as a deposit to reserve each participant’s or auditor’s place in the workshop. Unless another conductor is available, this fee is non-refundable. Five conductors will be chosen to take part in the masterclass.
There is no application fee for this opportunity.
Successful applicants are responsible for any travel and accommodation they require to attend the masterclass activities.
Unsuccessful applicants are invited to audit the course with the public audience.
