Marin Alsop and the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship invite you to join the #PurpleBaton campaign in honor of National Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.

Overview

#PurpleBaton celebrates women conductors in classical music, advocates for greater representation of women music directors and conductors, and broadcasts support for orchestras to invite more great women conductors onto their podiums.

What to do

Beginning March 1 and throughout the month, please share images or videos of you or your organization with a purple baton on your social channels, hashtagged #PurpleBaton.

Sample Post

“During Women’s History Month, I’m/we’re joining [Tag Marin Alsop] in celebrating great conductors who are women. Who will be on your podium? Pick up the #PurpleBarton and pass it on.”

You may also choose to tell us about:

  • Your work as a woman conductor.
  • A woman conductor you admire.
  • A great recording with a woman conductor.
  • The first time you heard a woman conductor in a concert or on a recording.

Why purple?

As a National Women’s History Month color, purple represents equity, loyalty, and justice. Today, only 10 percent of the world’s music directors are women or non-male identifying (learn more here). #PurpleBaton will inspire orchestras and classical music organizations to bring more women onto the podium.

In 2025, 114 purple batons were sent to conductors worldwide, including:
